OMPO – VILNIUS
“OMPO Vilnius” since 1999 coordinated and implemented several international environmental programs in Lithuania and in the neighbouring countries (“Inventory of Important Wetlands in Lithuania” (1999-2002), “Conservation of biodiversity in the Nemunas River delta” (2000-2003), “Biodiversity in fishponds of Belarus and Lithuania” (2000-2001), “Important transboundary wetlands shared by Lithuania-Belarus and Lithuania-Russia” (2001-2003), etc., and in the Central and Eastern Europe (“Population Status of Snipes in the Eastern Baltic Region” (1999-2002), “Changes of the Wintering Sites of Waterfowl in Central and Eastern Europe” (1999-2001), “Bird Migration and Avian Influenza in Eastern Europe” (2006-2008), “Restoration of internationally important floodplains for waterbirds shared by Lithuania, Belarus and Russia” (2012 – 2015), “Duck populations in Eastern Europe” (2008 – 2017) and others.

Since 2007 the Public Organization “OMPO Vilnius” participated in several major programs funded by the EU Commission and was responsible for their administration (“Conservation of Biodiversity in the Cross-border Lake Druksiai shared by Lithuania and Belarus”, 2007-2008, “Environmental Impact Assessment of the Visaginas Nuclear Power Station”, 2009, “Conservation and Management of Vulnerable Great Snipe Population”, 2010, “Designation of the cross-border Adutiskis/Vileity Ramsar Site”, 2010-2011). It was also responsible for coordination of certain activities of the major UNEP/GEF Program “Wings over Wetlands” implemented in the Nemunas River delta in 2007-2010.

Results of these programs were compiled in several publications published by “OMPO Vilnius” and reported in certain key international conferences (European Conferences of Convention on Wetlands, Bled, 2000, Yerevan, 2004; Global Conference of Convention on Wetlands, Valencia, 2002; Conferences of Ornithological European Society, 2000, 2002, 2006; IUCN Global Conference, 2004, Bird Migration and Global Change Conference, 2010, IUGB Congress 2010, 2014, etc.).

“OMPO Vilnius” has arranged 7 major international conferences related to migratory birds and their habitats in Central and Eastern Europe.
